Today was windy.

We went out to the nearby Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge. This area was once a ranch, the Lindsay Ranch, before the U.S. Atomic Energy Department (and then the Department of Energy) used the site to produce nuclear weapons. The last shipment of nuclear materials was made during my lifetime. The plant was shut down and underwent a 7 billion dollar Superfund investigation. Now, the National Renewable Energy Lab has several less-controversial wind turbines nearby.

Rocky Flats opened to the public in 2018, with most people avoiding it because of its radioactive past. It now protects over 600 species of plants and some federally protected wildlife, like special meadow jumping mice.

When asked, Tom said, “It was a nice day.”
