Summer Road Trip – Going West

Summer is in full swing and each day has felt a bit longer than it should. Tom and I needed a recharge. We set out for a week-long summer road trip, backpacking adventure, and camping bonanza to explore a corner of Colorado we haven’t seen before.

From sprawling vistas to train rides, to camp raids we had an amazing week. Follow our next few posts to join the adventure.

Wolf Creek Valley Overlook

Our road trip had amazing views. This overlook in Mineral County, Co. had quite the vista.

Chimney Rock

We didn’t have time to walk up to the archeological sites at this National Monument because they were closing, but Chimney Rock stood out from a distance against the evening sun.

Durango’s Main St. was bumping with several restaurants, tourist shops, and old hotels. There were several murals scattered throughout the town that we enjoyed.

We watched the train back in for the night, knowing we’d wake up early the next morning to catch the train out to Chicago Basin.

Train Ride

This train took us out into the Chicago Basin for our backpacking adventure. The entire ride was spectacular.

Be on the Train

When we got off of the train, the bridge to the trailhead greeted us with a half-eaten hare.

** See mountain goats join our campsite in our upcoming post. **
